Q: I planned to go camping to sand lake but my friend told me that i need a special permit for memorial weekend. Can you tell me more about or where can i get it. I tried to find it online but i couldn't

A: Due to the popular user demand on Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day weekends at Sand Lake, 1,200 permits are available and required for each street legal, licensed off-highway vehicle. Get your permit from USDA Forest Service - Hebo Ranger District. PO Box 235, Hebo, OR 97122  503.392.3161/541.750.7127

Q: I was going to plan a camping trip out there but needed some clarification before we set up the site. Last year I was there and there was to be no alcohol at all on the sand or on Derek Rd. Is this still the case? Is alcohol allowed in the campgrounds? Or just in the main parking lot camping? I wanted to make use of the campground and have some beer, but do not want to get a ticket!

A: As part of a plan to provide for a safer off-highway vehicle recreation experience, the Siuslaw National Forest is banning alcohol possession in off-highway vehicle riding areas in the Sand Lake Recreation Area and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

A Federal order prohibiting possession of alcohol in off-highway vehicle riding areas, outside of developed sites and staging areas, takes effect May 1, 2003. It is anticipated the prohibition will remain in effect indefinitely. See more detailed information from the Forest Service
