Sand Lake Recreation Area, a popular off-highway vehicle site, includes 1,100 acres of Siuslaw National Forest. The area is situated adjacent to the ocean beaches between Cape Lookout and the mouth of the Sand Lake estuary.
The climate at Sand Lake has strong marine influences. Summers are cool and winters are moderate. Westerly winds are predominant being from the northwest during the summer and from the southwest in the winter. These winds from the ocean bring heavy rainfall in the winter and fog in the summer.
Due to the popular user demand on Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day weekends at Sand Lake, 1,200 permits are available and required for each street legal, licensed off-highway vehicle. Get your permit from the Hebo Ranger Station.

Corvallis, OR – Due to the need to address public safety and sanitation issues at Sand Lake Recreation Area, the Siuslaw National Forest will implement two special forest orders beginning Monday, September 1, 2008.

One Order, to be issued under 36 CFR 261.56, prohibits using a motorized vehicle within dispersed areas on all National Forest lands at Sand Lake Recreation Area between the hours of 12 p.m. and 6 a.m. The second Order, issued under 36 CFR 261.58(e), prohibits camping in dispersed areas at Sand Lake Recreation Area unless possessing and using a portable toilet.

The 12 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew period matches a Tillamook County ordinance for Sand Lake Recreation Area approved at a recent Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting. Read More

Tsunami Siren Testing
The Hebo Ranger District, in cooperation with Tillamook County Emergency Management, placed a tsunami siren in the Sand Lake Recreation Area which lies within the
tsunami inundation zone. On the second Monday of each month, at 1:00 p.m., a 3 minute solid tone-out will occur as a test of the system.
